Upset tummies, bloating and digestive discomfort can be attributed to many different factors. It can be tricky to figure out, and often times the remedy is to give the digestive system a rest, drink a digestive tonic or take a probiotic.

We love all these options, however sometimes these alone are not enough and symptoms persist.

If this is the case for you, we recommend talking to your healthcare provider about your specific symptoms. It's important to investigate for underlying causes such as inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, gallbladder infections and other more serious conditions including dysautonomia.

Our brain and gut are closely connected and stress also plays a big role, so part of our approach to gut related symptoms should include taking care of our emotional wellbeing through adequate sleep, exercise, play and rest.

In many cases of chronic digestive symptoms with unknown cause, a diagnosis of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) may be given. Sometimes medications are prescribed, and certain diets may be recommended.

For many with IBS symptoms a Low FODMAP Diet may be of benefit. FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) are specific carbohydrates (sugars) found in many common foods that can be hard to digest.

Investigations for SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) may also be recommended, most commonly by a Naturopath or Functional Medicine Doctor. SIBO occurs when harmful bacteria colonize the small intestine, resulting in ongoing bloating, headaches and/or brain fog, food intolerances and other health complications.

Bottom line - digestive discomfort is our bodies way of telling us something. We just need to tune in closer, and maybe get a little help, to figure out what it's saying. Remember those 'whispers' will become louder and louder until we do.
